Biography

Frederick Krafft, an editor and a socialist politician from Ridgefield, New Jersey, was sentenced to five years in prison. He began serving his term in Atlanta Penitentiary on October 22, 1917. A "pro-war" Socialist, Krafft went to prison for making a speech in Newark, New Jersey. In upholding his sentence, the federal court of appeals noted that Krafft, an editor and a candidate for governor of New Jersey, was "a man of much public prominence." Lie received a full presidential pardon in 1919.
