Alexander Scott

Alexander Scott was the editor of the Passaic Weekly Issue, a socialist newspaper that covered the 1913 Paterson silk strike sympathetically. He was prosecuted under New Jersey's 1902 Criminal Anarchy Law — passed after the McKinley assassination — for editorials condemning Paterson police violence against strikers. Sentenced to 1 to 15 years at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton, his case became a landmark First Amendment fight for the early labor and free-speech movements.
