Biography

Evan Welling Thomas Younger brother of Norman Thomas; Princeton seminary student studying in Edinburgh when the U.S. entered WWI; returned home and refused induction as an absolutist conscientious objector. After leading a hunger strike at Fort Riley, Kansas in August 1918, court-martialed, sentenced to life imprisonment, transferred to Fort Leavenworth, where held in solitary confinement and chained handcuffed to his cell door for 14 days. Sentence commuted; released 1919. Later trained as a physician, chaired the War Resisters League for many years.
