Biography
Elliott "Smokey" Madison is a former social worker and a member of The Curious George Brigade (CGB), an anarchist collective. At the 2009 G-20 gathering of world leaders in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he listened into a police scanner and relayed information on Twitter to assist protestors in safely avoiding cops. He was arrested there on September 24, 2009 and had his Jackson Heights, Queens home (the anarchist collective known as Tortuga House) raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Joint Terrorism Task Force on October 1, 2009. His case was one of the earlier cases of tweeting in support of protest efforts being retaliated against by law enforcement. Madison and his wife have a long history of working for the People’s Law Collective, a group he described as providing legal representation for protesters. He was eventually released shortly after.
