Biography

Ellen Moves Camp was an Oglala Lakota activist and co-founder of the Oglala Sioux Civil Rights Organization. She was one of the women who pushed AIM leaders to act, helping precipitate the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, where she ran camp logistics and negotiated with federal officials during the 71-day siege. During the subsequent Wounded Knee trials she was forcibly removed from the courtroom and arrested, and she remained a respected movement elder until her death in 2008.
