Biography

Ponca leader of the American Indian Movement and the national AIM officer who led the initial seizure of Wounded Knee on February 27, 1973. He was convicted in 1975 of interfering with a U.S. postal inspector detained at Wounded Knee, but the conviction was reversed on appeal in 1976 (United States v. Camp, 541 F.2d 737) over a defective indictment; accounts of how much time he actually served at Leavenworth vary, with obituaries citing roughly two to three years. He remained active in Indigenous sovereignty work until his death in 2013.
