Biography

Earl M. Humphreys was a conscientious objector from Pennsylvania imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison - reduced to 1. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered on June 5, 1917, but not as a C.O.; interviewed by Special Board for disobedience of orders, on Jan. 5, 1919; sentenced to 10 years in prison - reduced to 1.5 yrs.; brother was Dr. J. Charles Humphreys
