Biography
Curtis Coggins was a conscientious objector from California imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenwortth. Sentenced to 5 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: did not register for draft on June 5, 1917, as did most others who were interviewed for survey; was not interviewed by Bd.; charged with violation of 96th Article of War; sentenced to 5 years in prison; reason for stance = socialist; member of Socialist Party
