Biography

Claude C. Culp was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Indiana imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 25 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Zachary Taylor; verbal abuse suffered only; was never asked to put uniform on; not sent to regular guardhouse b/c there were too many C.O.s etc., but placed under guard in regular barracks; refused order to rake grass seed at camp around base hospital; appeared before Bd. …
