Biography

Charles Moore was a Church of the Brethren conscientious objector from Pennsylvania imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 15 years in prison, reduced to 2 years. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered on June 5, 1917, but not as a C.O.; interviewed by Bd. at Meade on June 8, __ and on July 24, __; class = 1A; charged with disobedience of orders; sentenced to 15 years in prison, reduced to 2 years
