Biography
Betty Powell was a member of the New Orleans Black Panther Party. During the pre-dawn raid of November 26, 1970, in which about fifty New Orleans police disguised as priests and postal workers stormed the party's office in the Desire housing project, she was shot in the chest. She was among the six people then arrested and charged with attempted murder and violating the federal firearms act, and was held at the Orleans Parish Prison awaiting trial.
