Biography
Asbury Howard Jr., a Korean War veteran, was arrested on a disorderly-conduct charge after he was beaten defending his father — the Bessemer, Alabama labor and civil-rights leader Asbury Howard — from a white mob inside the courthouse. While the white attackers went free, he was sentenced in March 1959 to a year's imprisonment and a $100 fine and jailed with his father.
