Biography

Amos T. Bontrager was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Indiana imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Camp Zachary Taylor; refused to wear uniform; worked at officers' mess; put in guard house with soldiers for 4 months for refusing fatigue duty among officers; mistreatment included standing at attention for hours at a time, "double timing," etc.; sentenced to 10 years in prison; …
