Biography
Alfred Lee Cook was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi, on March 27, 1961, during the Tougaloo Nine's sit-in at the main branch of the Jackson public library — one of the arrests recorded by the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission and preserved in the Civil Rights Digital Library. The catalog establishes the arrest, the participation, and the individually identified police photograph, but not the court disposition, any transfer to Parchman, or the physical release date; those fields are unresolved pending county-jail, court, or penitentiary records.
He was one of the Tougaloo Nine.
The library sit-in cost each of the nine about thirty-two hours in municipal custody. They were released on March 28, 1961 for court, convicted of disturbing the peace, fined $100 each and given thirty-day suspended sentences.
