Biography

Alfred H. Hirsch was secretary of the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners — the intellectuals' defense body associated with Theodore Dreiser — jailed in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1934 while observing the furniture-strike picket line, one of many arrests under Mayor Frank Hague's anti-labor crackdown.
