Alabama troopers and a sheriff's posse attacked some 600 voting-rights marchers with clubs and tear gas as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. John Lewis's skull was fractured. The televised violence — inflicted by law enforcement on peaceful marchers — forced the Voting Rights Act onto the national agenda.
