Carter commutes the sentences of the Puerto Rican Nationalists

President Jimmy Carter commuted the sentences of Oscar Collazo, Lolita Lebrón, Rafael Cancel Miranda, and Irving Flores — the Puerto Rican Nationalists imprisoned since the 1950 attack on Blair House and the 1954 shooting in the U.S. House of Representatives. Released days later after more than a quarter century inside, they flew home to San Juan to a heroes' welcome.

Twenty years later, Carter would again back clemency for Puerto Rican independence prisoners, urging President Clinton to release the FALN prisoners freed in 1999.
