Seattle General Strike begins

Sixty-five thousand workers shut down Seattle for five days in the first citywide general strike in U.S. history. The strike was peaceful and self-organized — strikers ran milk deliveries and hospital services — but it triggered a national red-scare panic, mass arrests of radicals, and the raids and deportations that followed that year.
