Elaine massacre begins in Arkansas

White mobs and federal troops killed more than a hundred Black sharecroppers — some estimates run far higher — after union organizing in Phillips County, Arkansas. The only people prosecuted were Black: twelve were sentenced to death by mob-dominated juries, a travesty the Supreme Court finally condemned in Moore v. Dempsey.
