38 Dakota men hanged in Mankato — largest mass execution in U.S. history
Thirty-eight Dakota Sioux men were hanged simultaneously at Mankato, Minnesota, after President Lincoln approved their executions for participation in the U.S.–Dakota War. It remains the largest mass execution in U.S. history. Lincoln had commuted 264 other death sentences.
