USA PATRIOT Act signed into law

Less than seven weeks after September 11, President George W. Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act. The law dramatically expanded warrantless surveillance, federal material-support statutes, and the FBI's authority to investigate political organizations — tools that have since been used against Muslim, anti-war, and Black liberation organizers.
