Pedro Albizu Campos, the foremost twentieth-century Puerto Rican independence leader and president of the Nationalist Party, dies in San Juan from health complications widely attributed to radiation experiments conducted on him during his decades in U.S. federal prisons. Sentenced in 1937 for "seditious conspiracy," he served roughly 25 of his last 30 years in custody.
