The 'Soviet Ark' deports Emma Goldman and 248 others

The USAT Buford sailed from New York for Soviet Russia carrying 249 deported radicals, Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman among them — most guilty of nothing but membership and speech. J. Edgar Hoover, who built the deportation case, watched the ship leave.
