Attica prison uprising ends with state assault, 43 killed

After four days of negotiations, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller ordered state troopers to retake Attica prison by force. The assault killed 39 people — 29 prisoners and 10 hostages, all shot by state officers — and 4 more during the uprising itself.
