Supreme Court upholds Debs conviction
In Debs v. United States, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld Eugene Debs's ten-year Espionage Act sentence for an anti-war speech in Canton, Ohio. Justice Holmes wrote the opinion. The ruling confirmed that, in wartime America, a speech could be a federal crime — and sent the country's most famous socialist to prison.
