Greensboro sit-ins begin

Four Black college students sat down at a whites-only Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and refused to leave. The sit-in movement they ignited spread to dozens of cities within weeks and put thousands of students in southern jails — many choosing "jail, no bail" to fill the cells rather than fund the system prosecuting them.
