Biography
Stanley L. Cohen is an American radical defense attorney known for representing politically targeted clients including members of Hamas, Anonymous hackers (notably Jeremy Hammond), Mohawk activists at Akwesasne, anti-globalization protesters, and other dissidents whom mainstream firms refused. Long a critic of U.S. counterterrorism prosecutions and Israeli policy in Palestine, Cohen was the subject of a years-long IRS investigation widely viewed by supporters as retaliation for his defense work. In April 2014 he pleaded guilty to a single count of impeding the administration of the internal revenue laws and was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. He surrendered to USP Canaan in 2015 and was released in 2016. Disbarred in New York during his incarceration, he later resumed activism and writing on political-prosecution and surveillance issues.
