Biography

Richard Gladstein was one of the five defense lawyers for the eleven Communist leaders tried at the 1949 Foley Square Smith Act trial, a landmark McCarthy-era prosecution. He was jailed six months for contempt of court, served his term at Texarkana, and was threatened with disbarment for his courtroom conduct.
