Biography

Pierce Butler was a wealthy Philadelphia landowner and grandson of the Founding Father of the same name — infamous for the 1859 'Weeping Time,' the largest single sale of enslaved people in U.S. history. A Southern sympathizer, he was arrested in August 1861 and held without charge at Fort Lafayette for about a month.
