Biography

Philip Agee was a former CIA case officer who became an influential critic of U.S. covert operations, particularly in Latin America. After resigning from the agency in 1969, he pursued a public campaign to expose clandestine activity, culminating in major publications that described intelligence methods and named agency personnel—actions that supporters framed as whistleblowing and that critics denounced as endangering lives.

His activism brought sustained government pressure: he was deported from the United Kingdom in 1977, expelled from several European countries, and had his U.S. passport revoked in 1979. Much of his later life was spent abroad, where he continued publishing and organizing around anti-imperialist causes.
