Biography

Ora J. Hartzler was a Mennonite conscientious objector from Missouri imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth; Fort Douglas. Sentenced to 25 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: sent to Jefferson Barracks; tried to refuse uniform, but was beaten & forced to wear it (civilian clothes taken away too); put in guardhouse for refusing military service; court-martialed at Camp Fremont (California); sentenced to 25 years in prison; sent to Ft.
