Biography
Norton Anthony Russell was an engineer of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and one of eight people whose contempt-of-Congress convictions — for refusing to answer the House Un-American Activities Committee — were on appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1958, in the wave of cases that followed the Supreme Court's Watkins decision.
His conviction was ultimately overturned: in Russell v. United States, 369 U.S. 749 (May 21, 1962), the Supreme Court reversed the contempt-of-Congress convictions of Russell and five co-petitioners because their indictments never identified the subject under committee inquiry.
