Biography
Nina Droz Franco became a prominent figure in Puerto Rican protest politics around May Day labor demonstrations in 2017 amid anger over austerity and the island’s fiscal crisis. She was arrested the day after those events and federally charged in connection with an alleged attempt to set fire to a Banco Popular building in San Juan.
She later entered a guilty plea and, in 2018, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison; reporting described her incarceration at the Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee and a later release back to Puerto Rico.
