Murray Melvin was a twenty-four-year-old vice-president of the Allied Printing Helpers' Union in New York, framed on a charge of assaulting a strikebreaker during the 1935 Typographic Service Company strike and sentenced in April 1936 to an indeterminate term on Rikers Island; a Defense Committee chaired by Heywood Broun won his release after six months.
