Biography
Elderly tenant farmer at whose Andes, Delaware County, New York farm Undersheriff Osman N. Steele was killed on August 7, 1845. Earle had withheld rent on his patroon-system leasehold and the rent-distress sale of his cattle that morning drew hundreds of disguised 'Calico Indian' Anti-Rent militants. Convicted of manslaughter by Judge Amasa J. Parker at the Delhi assize in October 1845 and sentenced to life imprisonment at Clinton State Prison at Dannemora as one of the older Anti-Renters whose tenancy was the immediate cause of the confrontation. Pardoned by Governor John Young in 1847.
