Minnie D. Abbott

Minnie D. Abbott Minnie Abbott was arrested along with many other women in 1917 for picketing for women's suffrage outside the White House (officially charged with obstructing traffic, a common charge for picketers) and given a choice between a $25 fine or 60 days in jail. Instead of being treated as political prisoners, they were regular inmates and had to shave and wear prison garb. Three days after the arrest President Wilon, under immense public pressure, pardoned Abbott along with her comrades but they refused to leave, not accepting the pardon without justice for women. It is important to note that of the >500 women who were arrested for picketing for women's suffrage, Abbott was the only one who actually served prison time.
