Biography

Michelle Duclos was a Montreal broadcaster and freelance writer associated with the Quebec independence movement. Arrested in New York on February 16, 1965, she was one of four people held in the national-monuments case involving Robert Steele Collier, Walter Augustus Bowe and Khaleel Sultarn Sayyed.

Duclos pleaded guilty to smuggling on May 13, 1965, before the men's trial, and cooperated as a prosecution witness. Judge William B. Herlands imposed a conditional five-year sentence on June 17. On September 20, he suspended that sentence and placed her on five years of probation, with permanent exclusion from the United States. The NPS-sponsored history records her subsequent deportation. The precise dates of her release from detention and departure for Canada have not been verified.
