Biography
Mary Paige was a young American-born Detroit woman arrested in a dawn FBI raid on February 6, 1940, one of the 'Detroit 16' charged under a revived 1818 anti-recruiting statute for aiding the recruitment of American volunteers for the Spanish Loyalist forces. Held in solitary in a cold cell at the Wayne County Jail with $10,000 bail, she saw the indictments dismissed by Attorney General Robert Jackson amid national protest.
