Mennonite biology senior at Goshen College from Alliance, Ohio, mailed a letter to Selective Service in August 1980 announcing he would not register on religious grounds. Convicted in U.S. District Court (N.D. Ohio); sentenced Oct. 19, 1982 to two years working at a hospital for the developmentally disabled and a $4,000 fine (no prison). His selective-prosecution appeals reached the Sixth Circuit twice (721 F.2d 1046 (1983); 815 F.2d 413 (1987)) and are landmark religious-conscience precedents.
