Biography
Florida mother convicted in 2012 of aggravated assault with a firearm for firing a warning shot into a wall to deter her abusive estranged husband — no one was hurt. Sentenced under Florida's 10-20-Life statute to 20 years despite raising a Stand Your Ground defense. Conviction overturned in 2013; pled to time served plus two years home detention in November 2014. Completed home detention January 27, 2017. Her case became a national rallying point against mandatory-minimum sentencing and the racial disparity in Stand Your Ground rulings.
