Biography

Navajo (Diné) war leader who led armed resistance to Kit Carson's 1863-66 scorched-earth campaign against the Navajo and the subsequent forced "Long Walk" deportation to the Bosque Redondo concentration camp at Fort Sumner, New Mexico. One of the last Navajo leaders to surrender (September 1866); held at Bosque Redondo until the 1868 Treaty of Bosque Redondo (which Manuelito signed) permitted the Navajo to return home. He continued as a principal chief of the Navajo until his death in 1893.
