Biography
Leopold Weinstein was a conscientious objector from New Jersey imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison - reduced to 2 years. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: registered for draft on June 5, 1917 as a CO; objected to war on Socialist and humanitarian grounds; was willing to accept noncombatant service, but his application was cancelled; interviewed in Feb. 1919 on the charge of disloyalty by the Special Bd. at the Disciplinary Barracks ; …
