Biography

Laurence Dewees was a Quaker conscientious objector from Iowa imprisoned during World War I. Court-martialed for refusing military service, he was held at Fort Leavenworth. Sentenced to 10 years in prison. (Documented in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection's World War I Conscientious Objectors database.) Archival note: was at Camp Gordon by July 1918; court-martialed & sentenced to 10 years in prison; imprisoned at Ft. Leavenworth on October 20, 1918 (or as late as October 22nd); after being in prison a few months, he was released & sent to Camp Dodge; later, was a Greyhound bus driver for 32 years; …
