Biography
Julian Assange was the editor of WikiLeaks, a website which publishes government documents sent to them by whistleblowers. The website gained international attention when it published a large cache of U.S. military documents proving the United States had committed war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2012, Assange sought asylum in the Embassy of Ecuador in London to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced dubious allegations of sexual misconduct. He remained in the embassy for seven years. In April 2019, Ecuador withdrew Assange's asylum, and he was arrested by British authorities. The United States subsequently sought his extradition on charges related to the unauthorized disclosure of classified information. In April 2022, a British judge ordered Assange extradited to the US to face up to 175 years in prison.
