John Robert Mazurek, 30, was arrested February 2, 2024 in Atlanta GA and charged with first-degree arson for allegedly torching eight police vehicles in July 2023 as a protest against the proposed Atlanta Police training facility (Cop City). In March 2026, took an Alford plea to a reduced charge of criminal damage to property; sentenced to 10 years probation. John Robert Mazurek was arrested in February 2024 in connection with the Stop Cop City movement opposing construction of a police and fire training facility near Atlanta. Authorities charged him with first-degree arson related to the July 1, 2023 burning of police motorcycles at a police special operations center.
Officials emphasized that an officer was inside the building at the time of the fire. Mazurek’s case has involved contentious pretrial detention and bond proceedings and is part of a wider prosecution effort targeting Cop City protest activity.
Stop Cop City defendant charged under Georgia's RICO Act in the August 2023 indictment of 61 forest defenders opposing the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. In March 2025, Mazurek filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Atlanta Police Department over his arrest and prosecution.
