Biography

John J. McNamara was the secretary-treasurer of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers and the brother of James B. McNamara. In the 1910–11 Los Angeles Times bombing case the brothers pleaded guilty; John was sentenced for the related dynamiting of the Llewellyn Iron Works and served about a decade at San Quentin. His case, prosecuted by the state and defended by Clarence Darrow, was a landmark of the class-war labor conflicts of the era.
