Biography
Joffre Stewart was a Chicago-based African-American pacifist, poet, and anti-conscription activist who refused to register for the draft during World War II and was arrested repeatedly across the following decades for anti-war civil disobedience. He was a familiar figure at Chicago peace demonstrations from the 1940s into the 21st century. Allen Ginsberg referenced him in 'Howl' as 'Joffre' the 'pacifist who refused the draft.'
