Biography
Smith was prosecuted alongside other striking miners in connection with the same eastern Kentucky coal-truck ambush during a labor conflict. The case focused on an armed assault on trucks hauling coal during the strike, viewed by prosecutors as an intentional attack on interstate-commerce transportation that carried an obvious risk of lethal harm.
