Ford—serving as a counterintelligence agent with the California National Guard—reported what he described as multiple incidents of detainee abuse at a base in Samarra and requested that his allegations be formally investigated. Accounts of what happened next describe Ford being placed under close supervision and rapidly removed from Iraq via medical evacuation, with superiors framing the situation as a mental-health issue rather than initiating the investigation he requested.
