Biography

Gilbert Montegut, 23, was one of the four Angola prisoners charged in the April 1972 killing of prison guard Brent Miller — the case that produced the Angola 3. Tried alongside Herman Wallace in Baton Rouge beginning January 7, 1974, in a trial The Black Panther described as marked with contradictions, inconsistencies and surprise — the fourth defendant, Chester Jackson, turned prosecution witness at its start — Montegut was acquitted while Wallace was convicted. Reconstructed from The Black Panther, 1974 run.
